How much does a sparring partner cost in Switzerland?
Simple life coaching costs around CHF 140 to 180 an hour in Switzerland; discreet sparring, where the other person comes to you, from CHF 300 an hour, travel included. Chelini's fee is fixed per format and length, for private and company payers; it is named in the first, confidential conversation or beforehand by e-mail, before you decide. Winn Chelini comes to you, from Zürich across the Gold Coast to Zug.
Ask for a price in this field and you rarely get a number: most providers in Zürich and Zug publish none and sell programmes. If your last coach was arranged and paid for by an employer, you may never have seen one at all. The published prices that exist fall into two tiers; they are summarised below as guide values. Then: what a fee depends on and how Chelini sets it.
Which formats does Chelini offer?
Each format has a fixed fee. It applies per session, in English or German; no VAT is added.
| Format | Duration | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Confidential conversation | 20 minutes, free | Phone or video |
| Sparring on site | 60 minutes (90 on request) | At your home, in your office or at a quiet place of your choice; travel included within 60 minutes’ drive of Wetzikon |
| Walk and talk | 60 minutes (90 on request) | By Lake Zürich, Lake Zug or in the woods; travel included as on site |
| Sparring online | 60 minutes | Video or phone |
| Ongoing sparring | 3 months | Four sessions and two short calls before important meetings |
The fee is fixed and depends on the format and the length of the conversation, never on who you are. I tell you what it is in the confidential conversation – before the first session, not after. On site and online differ in fee; the difference is the journey to you and the time it takes, not a different conversation. You pay per session, by invoice within 10 days or by TWINT, with no subscription and no package; you can cancel up to 24 hours before. What happens in the 60 minutes is described on the Sparring page.
What do coaching and sparring cost in Zürich, Zug and the rest of Switzerland?
‘Coaching’ and ‘sparring’ cover very different offers in Switzerland. The prices published around Zürich and Zug fall into two tiers; the figures are guide values as of October 2026. Most providers, though, publish no price at all.
| Offer | Where and what for | Guide value per hour |
|---|---|---|
| Simple life coaching | In a practice or online; goals, habits, personal development | CHF 140 to 180 |
| Sparring with discretion | At your home, in your office or on a walk; questions about family, company and wealth that must not get out | from CHF 300, travel included |
The difference is not the length of the conversation but the setting. Life coaching works on goals and habits, usually in a practice and often over several sessions. Sparring with discretion is for people whose questions must not get out – because family, company or wealth depend on them, or because people know who they are. The other person comes to you, nobody sees you walk into a practice, and they have no stake in your decision.
Executive coaching for managers is mostly sold as a programme over several months and paid for by the company – the frame in which a London or New York employer may have paid for your last coach. Those prices assume corporate budgets; for a private person paying out of their own pocket, they are not a benchmark.
Chelini belongs to the second tier. The fee is fixed and depends on the format and the length of the conversation, never on who you are; I tell you what it is in the confidential conversation – before the first session, not after. It includes the journey to you, the preparation and a conversation with one person who wants nothing from you; there is no programme you would have to buy on top. A single session is the normal case, not the exception.
What a fee depends on – and what to clarify before you compare
Of the providers you find in Zürich and Zug under ‘sparring partner’ or ‘executive coaching’, the majority name no amount on their website. There are three reasons, and none of them is dishonest.
First, many sell programmes rather than sessions: five to eight meetings over several months, often paid for by the company. The price then appears in the proposal, once the provider knows who is asking – not before. Second, prices are tiered by client: companies often pay more than private individuals; that tiering, too, is only settled once it is clear who pays the invoice. Third, the view is widespread that the value has to be explained in conversation before a number is named. The distinction that matters is therefore not whether a price appears on a website, but whether it is fixed and named before the first session – or set in a quote once the provider knows who is asking. My rule is simple: the fee is fixed and depends on the format and the length of the conversation, never on who you are. It is the same whether you pay privately or through your company, and I tell you what it is in the confidential conversation – before the first session, not after.
For you, that means clarifying three things before you compare prices. What is included in the fee – preparation, follow-up, travel? Do you pay per session or for a programme? And does the fee apply to everyone, or does it depend on who you are and who pays the invoice? If you are new in the country and still calibrating what things cost here, these three questions are worth more than any rate card.
What justifies a fee is not a list of titles but three things you can check: whether the person has carried responsibility and taken decisions under pressure, whether preparation and travel are included in the fee, and whether they have no stake whatsoever in the outcome – no mandate, no commission, no follow-up engagement. How sparring differs from coaching, consulting and mentoring, in price as well as in substance, is set out in Sparring partner, coach, mentor or consultant: what is the difference?.
Is travel to the Gold Coast or Zug extra?
No. Travel is included in the fee anywhere within 60 minutes’ drive of Wetzikon: the city of Zürich and both lake shores, Winterthur, all nine Gold Coast municipalities from Zollikon to Stäfa, Canton Zug, Wollerau and Pfäffikon SZ, Rapperswil-Jona and Einsiedeln. You pay the same whether we meet in Küsnacht ZH, in Baar or in Wollerau. Lucerne, Meggen and Hergiswil by arrangement: I tell you the travel cost before you commit.
This is worth saying because coaching usually takes place in a practice or an office; where home visits are offered, what the travel costs is rarely stated. If you live in Walchwil and work in Zug, or live in Erlenbach and commute to Paradeplatz, a session that comes to you saves an evening in town and a door that others see you walk through. Why I come to you, and what that means for confidentiality, is explained in Home and office visits: a sparring partner who comes to you; the regions in detail are on the Zürich, Gold Coast and Zug pages.
Single session or package: what is usual?
The package is usual. Executive coaching is mostly sold as a programme of five to eight sessions that costs several thousand francs and runs over months. Behind this is a model built for companies: developing a manager over months, paid from the training budget, often with HR in the loop.
If you have a decision in front of you, you usually need something else: one conversation, perhaps two. That is why Chelini has no package you have to buy and no subscription. You book one session; another happens only if you want it. If you are preparing a decision over several months – a succession, a sale, whether to stay in Switzerland when the assignment ends – you can choose ongoing sparring: four sessions and two short calls before important meetings, over three months. What a single session can and cannot do is the subject of A decision under time pressure: why one conversation is often enough.
Three warning signs when comparing prices: a fee that depends on who you are; a package you cannot leave without losing money; and an hourly rate that does not say what is included – preparation, follow-up, travel.
Can the invoice go to my company, and does health insurance pay?
The invoice can be made out to you personally or to your company, including a Swiss branch of a foreign employer. It shows the format and the date, not your topic. Whether your company may book sparring as training or as advisory expense is a question for your fiduciary (Treuhänder) or finance team, not for me. Whoever pays the invoice receives no information from the conversation – even when it is the company. Confidentiality is agreed in the contract and has three limits: a legally binding order of a court or an authority, an acute danger to life and limb, and the welfare of a child.
Health insurance does not pay. Sparring and coaching are not medical services; Swiss basic insurance does not cover them, and supplementary insurance generally does not either – ask your insurer if in doubt, and the same goes for an international health plan. For comparison: basic insurance pays for psychotherapy when a doctor has prescribed it, initially 30 sessions and further ones with prior approval; psychological counselling it does not pay for. That follows from what sparring is: a conversation for people who are fundamentally healthy and able to act, not a treatment. If you are not well, your question belongs first with your GP or a psychotherapist – I will say so openly in the first, confidential conversation.
Paying yourself has one advantage: there is nobody I report to, no medical record and no insurer that learns of the conversation. What confidentiality means in Swiss law and where it ends is explained in Is coaching confidential in Switzerland? What the law says.
