Inherited or sold up: who has nothing to gain from you?

With someone who manages nothing and sells nothing. Inherited or sold up, you have people around you but rarely one with nothing to gain: the bank earns from the assets, the family office holds a position, siblings share your history. Winn Chelini is that person: an independent sparring partner in Zürich, on the Gold Coast and in Zug.

Why is it so hard to find someone with no agenda once the money has landed?

How to invest, structure or tax the money is a matter for your bank, tax adviser and lawyer. This is about the question before that: who you think it through with, before you instruct any of them.

Whether it came by inheritance or by a sale, the effect on the people around you is much the same. Nobody left. But those who used to simply listen now do the sums. Friends know roughly what you have. Siblings know exactly what you received. Former co-founders know what you walked away with. Advisers know what they make from it. And there is a sentence you cannot say out loud without someone rolling their eyes: that it is still not simple.

That is nothing to apologise for. For “what do I actually want?” there is simply nobody in your circle whose answer has nothing riding on it.

Siblings, family office, bank, co-founders, old friends: who wants what?

This is not a charge against anyone. Interests are normal; the difficulty is having to discount them in every conversation before you can hear anything.

  • Siblings share your history and often the same estate. When your brother suggests a joint property company, he hears your hesitation not as a question but as an answer. I cannot judge whether the deal is good; whether your hesitation is caution or old mistrust is something we can think through.
  • The family office has a position and a mandate. It works for the family, and in your case “the family” is not necessarily you.
  • The bank makes money from what it manages. Bank-client confidentiality (Art. 47 Banking Act) protects your data; it says nothing about which products land on your desk.
  • Former co-founders and investors have a history with you, a view on your next step and sometimes still a line on the cap table.
  • Old friends stayed, but some have become wary and others free with advice. Both colour what you hear.

The same interests around a business owner are set out in Who do you talk to when everyone around you has a stake?

How do you tell whether a counterpart really has no stake in you?

Anyone who finds a website like this is right to be suspicious: on paper it fits exactly, and that is precisely what should make you pause. Some of it you can check before you call: the commercial register entry (CHW-Services GmbH, Wetzikon) and the legal notice, no partner network on this website, and a CV that starts long before coaching. The rest, what you would ask on the phone before inviting anyone into your home, is answered here in advance.

Do you make money from me anywhere else? No. No mandate, no arrangement with a bank, wealth manager, insurer or family office, no referral fee, no retrocession. If I name a specialist, I get nothing for it.

Who am I dealing with? Always the same person: Winn Chelini, no team, no assistant. I spent many years leading large engineering projects; you learn who is leaving what unsaid.

What happens to what I tell you? Confidentiality is agreed in writing, and it applies to your family, your family office and whoever recommended me. It has three limits, which I name beforehand: a legally binding order of a court or authority, acute danger to life and limb, the welfare of a child. I record nothing; brief notes are destroyed no later than 12 months after we finish. The invoice shows the format and the date, not your topic. For the confidential conversation beforehand a first name is enough; I need a surname and address only for the invoice. I do not have professional secrecy as doctors and lawyers do (Art. 321 Criminal Code), and I do not promise it; what Swiss law provides: Is coaching confidential in Switzerland? What the law says.

Who do you work with when the family is split? One side only: you. I do not talk to your sister, your co-founder or your family office, and I do not chair family meetings.

Do I have to sit in a waiting room somewhere? No. I come to your home in Küsnacht, Zollikon or Baar, your office in Zürich or Zug, or a quiet place of your choice, and the whole conversation can be in English if you prefer (home and office visits). Nobody sees you walk into a practice.

Do you only talk to business owners? No. Whether you ran a company or never had one makes no difference here; it is about your question, not your role.

Can I stop after one conversation? Yes. You owe me no reason, and I will not call to ask. No package, no programme, no minimum number of sessions.

What is this conversation not: therapy, wealth management, advice?

Not psychotherapy: I do not diagnose, I keep no file, nothing reaches a health insurer. Not coaching in the usual sense: no goals to set, no exercises, no process over months. And not advice: I will not tell you whether to join your brother’s company, keep the house or cancel the bank’s mandate. That is not my role; you have specialists for it, and I am there for the question before it.

What it is: a conversation between two adults. You talk, in your own words, without preparation. I listen, ask which assumption has never been tested, and tell you what I see, including the part you would rather not hear. At the end you know what you do next, or you deliberately leave it open for now. For the flatness of the year after a sale, read After selling the company: who am I now? Who does what: Sparring partner, coach, mentor or consultant: what is the difference?

Who pays, and why does that make it independent?

The fee is fixed and depends on the format and the length of the conversation, never on who you are or what you have. I tell you what it is in the confidential conversation – before the first session, not after. The formats: 60 minutes in person, 90 minutes on request, travel included within 60 minutes’ drive of Wetzikon; 60 minutes online.

You pay, personally, per session, with no subscription and no package. Nobody else pays me for this conversation, so I answer to nobody else. No mandate runs on while you hesitate, no commission grows if you buy, no fee depends on you coming back. That is why I can disagree with you. For context: How much does a sparring partner cost in Switzerland?

When is this a matter for a doctor or psychotherapist rather than sparring?

Those who ask a question like this mostly sleep, function, have people around them. What is missing is an hour to think aloud with nobody in the room who wants something from you. That calls for the right counterpart, not a doctor.

It is different if sleep has been missing for weeks, if nothing gives you pleasure any more, or if thoughts of harming yourself appear. Then your first port of call is your GP or a psychotherapist, not a sparring partner. In an acute crisis, call the Dargebotene Hand helpline on 143; in an emergency, call 144. I will tell you if you need more than a conversation. Where the line runs: When you need a therapist, and when a sparring partner is enough.

In short

After an inheritance or a sale, what is missing is rarely people; it is someone with nothing to gain: siblings have history, bank and family office a mandate, co-founders a cap table. Sparring is a conversation with someone who is paid per conversation, manages nothing, sells nothing, is bound in writing to confidentiality and tells you what he sees.

If you would like to think this question through with someone who has no stake in it: Winn Chelini, independent confidant and sparring partner in Zürich, on the Gold Coast and in Zug. The first step is a confidential conversation – 20 minutes, by phone or video, free and with no follow-up from my side.

Short answers

Questions on this topic

Is this not a problem most people would like to have?

It is a question that is nobody's job in your circle: there are specialists for the money, a dinner table for the family, doctors for your health. For what you yourself want, there is nobody who has nothing riding on the answer. That others are worse off does not make the question smaller; it only makes it harder to say out loud.

Will you end up recommending a wealth manager or a lawyer after all?

Only if you ask, and then with nothing in return: no referral fee, no arrangement, no network that makes money from you. I have no ties to any bank, family office or insurer. Where a specialist is needed, I say so; whom you instruct is your decision.

Do you also talk to my siblings, my co-founders or my family office?

No. I work with one side: you. I do not talk to your brother, your sister, your former co-founder or your family office, and I do not chair family meetings. The fact that we know each other falls under the written confidentiality commitment, with its three limits: an order of a court or authority, acute danger to life and limb, the welfare of a child.
